unit 1 music video analysis
Title of video - Kid cudi - mr rager
Purpose - Since the birth of music videos, there has been a major change. Especially the introduction of narrative into music videos, included in the video we are analysing called mr rager by kid cudi. Within the first two minutes of the video you can see the purpose is narrative based. A story is being told by the artist and director.
As Kid Cudi has said in various tweets, interviews and blogs. The video to mr rager has a deeper meaning than what some viewers may think, and there is a message behind it. The purpose of the video is simply to get his message across. As shown in the video, kid cudi is fighting a large amount of people in a dark eerie building. Most people would think nothing of this, but there is a creative/imaginative purpose behind it all. The building is a representation of his conscience, he is in a dream like state. As you can see in the video, the main character (kid cudi) is wearing a brown coloured jacket, where as every other character seen is wearing a black jacket. This character is fighting everyone by himself. The biker looking characters in black jackets represent Kid Cudi's problems/demons/dilemmas in everyday life, explaining why he is fighting against them. He does this in order to get through life as a good person with morals and to not become one of them. As shown, this isnt easy for the character, as he falls numerous times and becomes slow/tired. Towards the end of the video, a girl appears and throws dust/sand at kid cudi while he is down, stopping the character from being able to see. This is a simple metaphor of past relations with women, that have blinded his view of things. For example, solutions to defeat and overcome his problems. Leading to him being stunned and confused, then as the video comes towards an end, and most of the characters are dead/defeated. Another character dressed in black slowly comes towards him, takes down his hood and stabs kid cudi. As then shown, this character is Mr rager, which is also kid cudi, but his darker side. The video then ends as kid cudi wakes up from the dream like state, where he is sat talking to a therapist. Looking shocked and confused. The video concludes highlighting kid cudi has realized his real enemy is himself, and he must change himself in order to overcome his problems.

Unit 6 Notes
Genre - the type of something, for example there are different genres of film (sci fi,drama, horror etc) and there are also genres within music (hip hop, dance, rock) a genre defines a certain style of something
Target Audience - the target audience is a group of people that are aimed at, for example a movie distributor may target their film at a certain audience which may include their hobbies, interests, age or gender. A target audience is a certain category of people.
Oppositional Reading - Is what your not supposed to think/feel about something for example a programme/product. Grand Theft Auto may be said to make people violent, this may come from parents or people who are not the target audience. Although it may not always come from people who are not the target audience, for example not all women may enjoy chick flicks.
Preferred reading - Where a target audience agrees with a certain product, a person feels how the producer wants them to.
Mode of address - how something speaks to you, the tone of how they are speaking.
Generic conventions - what you expect to see within something. For example in a sci fi film you expect to see spaceships, futuristic technology, aliens etc
The star trek trailer met the generic conventions of a sci fi film but the trailer also challenged the generic conventions as in the beginning there was a normal car/slow mo dive and a desert setting which would most likely to be seen in an action film. This make's the trailer more interesting as this was not expected.
I think the star trek audience targets explorers, as they like to explore new ideas and discover a narrative with a mix of genres into one. For example the intro includes generic conventions of an action movie. It is also targeted at sci fi fans as it included space ships/explosions/futuristic technology. Comedy fans may also go and watch this film as simon pegg is in the trailer. I think the trailer is mostly aimed at the stereotypical man as the trailer consists of explosions, women, fighting and action. Star trek fans will also watch the film as they follow the films and it includes the spock close up (movement of the hand) Women may also be interested in the film as it includes a narrative of strong women and romance.
Narrative Structures - The narrative is usually linear (in a straight line, things happen in order)
Single strand (one plot line, story of one person)
Non linear - (to break the straight line of the story, things may not happen in order)
Multi stranded - (many characters with many story-lines, think soaps/love actually)
Enigma codes - (puzzles we need the character to solve and that keep us interested)
Character types - (hero,villain,victim)
Flashbacks - (characters looking back at certain events)

Generic Conventions
Generic conventions in a science fiction film
- Space
- Spaceships/UFO's
- Aliens
- Futuristic weapons/tools/equipment
- Special fx
- Advanced technology
- conflict
- good vs evil
The inbetweeners
Generic conventions of a comedy
- funny props (car door)
- costumes (monkey costume, vest and speedo's, neils lack of costume)
- dialogue (clunge mobile, inconsiderate arseholes, think of the little lovely's in there)
- narrative (enigmas - car door bp garage, wills rant) midshot of his rant, enigma reveals who he is sat next to with a wide shot (disabled people) cut to hearse then cuts back to their faces (creates humor)
Representations of young men
- costume
- dialogue
- actions/body language/facial expressions
is it a stereotype? negative? positive?
jay's body language and dialogue defines the image of a stereotypical young 'lad' for example he
uses language such as 'clunge' 'muff' and other terms to describe women he wants to attract. This show's he is desperate for female attention. Adult's and older people or women may look at this in a negative and crude way. When simon is driving Jay shouts 'follow that clunge mobile' which is a typical line of dialogue from him. Out of all the characters Jay is the most crude and the stereotypical lad. This shows the programme is aimed at young men as they may relate to the characters and find it funny and entertaining. Will is the opposite to jay, as his costume shows. He wears his uniform correctly with his shirt tucked in etc. He also carries a briefcase. This represents Will as a typical 'geek' or 'nerd' his language also shows this with lines such as 'although he did say it like a terrible misogynist' The young male audience will find it amusing how the other lads humiliate him. The target audience is also clearly men as there is crude humour towards women from a young lad's perspective as all young males will relate to. All which may be looked at in a negative way from women or older people. There is also enigma codes for example will narrates while a clip is being played 'Simon never told us what happened at his driving test' which relates to the narrative being played at that moment in time. This technique adds humour. The narrative is mostly linear although the intro to the programme contains flashbacks to the episode before which is non linear. The episode also deals with issues young people will relate too for example bullying and humilation/teasing between friends. The narrative is being told through wills voiceover. This technique is used to direct the audience on what is happening between dialogue. Wills tone of voice creates his representation. Neil's body language and movement on the floor in his monkey costume created humour. People who would have the oppositional reading may be older people both men and women. Who may find the episode childish and not humorous.

Music Video -
Narrative: This narrative of this video will be of two friends. When they were young they were best friends but slowly grew apart when society made them conform to different people. One was incredibly academic but very unsociable, whilst the other was very sporty but struggled in class. As this affected them throughout school they then became enemies. The academic friend made the other look stupid in class and the sporty friend made the sure nobody spoke the him inside or outside of school. Eventually, they both break down. Resulting in them having a fight, obviously the sporty one wins but the the other will put up a good fight! at the end of the fight they both realise how silly their feud has been and the friend standing over the other holds out a hand and helps his friend up.
Then both of them return to being friends even though society tells them not to. We'll see the academic friend tutoring the other and the sociable friend, in return, getting people to like him and be able to approach him.
Visually I don't want this music video to match any conventions to a normal rock video because of the meaning of the song. The song is about breaking out from society and so the video should do that too.
The Music video will be set in a college and will focus on different conflicts throughout the week that the two enemies have (we won't know that they were once friends yet!). I will close ups on each character as they are rejected or mad to look stupid and use a front facing tracking shot of them walking down corridor with OTS shots when they see each other. The fight scene will be filmed in slow-motion with close ups of the kicks, punches, tackles etc. I don't want the fight to take place in a playground or in an alley way as this would be a conventional place for a fight. Instead I would like to use perhaps a tire or scrap yard with dust on the floors that will be swept up in the fight. Also this will give the impression that our two enemies are there specifically to fight, not just a spur of the moment playground fight with a couple of head locks and some 'Mum' jokes.
Overall the video will have an essence of maturity to it, this isn't a normal broken friendship narrative. These friends have been made in to enemies by society telling what they should do and who they should be. This effects adults too and it's results can last a life time. I believe that the band '30 Seconds To Mars' picked their audience as young people for a reason and that this song was meant to help them when they need it the most. I want to keep that theme going with my video and not for it to loose any of it's meaning.

Audiences - Video Games
1 - Which games do you play?
I play free roam games like grand theft auto, i also enjoy playing racing games like forza.
Do you think games are gender based?
In some ways yes, because shooting and action games with a war based narrative are aimed at the male gender. But there may be games in between which may be aimed for both male and female. There is also games you would presume are aimed at the female gender, for example dance games or sims etc.
Do you think video games influence people's attitudes+behaviour?
I think in some cases people are influenced by games including violence, for example people who have comitted crimes or even murders have been found to had play these games. But i believe these people have a mental problem before hand. Any healthy human should not be influenced by such games and be influenced by reality instead.

Documentary unit 2&3 reflective analaysis
What worked? We had some very professional looking transitions created in Adobe After Effects. We also had a good sounding and visually pleasing interview with a biology teacher within college. The after effects editing was our strongest part of the documentary.
Why did it work well? We worked together to make sure we got the filming done in time and we let everyone have ago so there was nobody left out and everybody shared their ideas in a creative way. Harry was good at using after effects and did our editing. We had good equipment and everyone in the group was passionate and interesting in creating our documentary.
What could of been improved?
We could of worked a little harder with our sound. As one of the interview's quality of sound wasnt the best and there was a few mistakes where ambient sound was recorded also. To improve next time we may use the correct microphone's needed and make sure we understand how to use the equipment efficiently.
How will you improve your next production?
Step by step making sure each factor of the documentary is finished to our best standards and before moving onto another step, make sure there is no mistakes and take numerous takes in order to get our best efforts.
What new skills did you learn? From talking and watching Harry, i learnt some new skills and techniques/ways to use certain effects in After Effects. This will become handy in future when we produce another production i may be able to learn more skills if i am in the same group as Harry.
