Unit 6 Notes

Genre - the type of something, for example there are different genres of film (sci fi,drama, horror etc) and there are also genres within music (hip hop, dance, rock) a genre defines a certain style of something

Target Audience - the target audience is a group of people that are aimed at, for example a movie distributor may target their film at a certain audience which may include their hobbies, interests, age or gender. A target audience is a certain category of people.

Oppositional Reading - Is what your not supposed to think/feel about something for example a programme/product. Grand Theft Auto may be said to make people violent, this may come from parents or people who are not the target audience. Although it may not always come from people who are not the target audience, for example not all women may enjoy chick flicks.

Preferred reading - Where a target audience agrees with a certain product, a person feels how the producer wants them to.

Mode of address - how something speaks to you, the tone of how they are speaking.

Generic conventions - what you expect to see within something. For example in a sci fi film you expect to see spaceships, futuristic technology, aliens etc

The star trek trailer met the generic conventions of a sci fi film but the trailer also challenged the generic conventions as in the beginning there was a normal car/slow mo dive and a desert setting which would most likely to be seen in an action film. This make's the trailer more interesting as this was not expected.

I think the star trek audience targets explorers, as they like to explore new ideas and discover a narrative with a mix of genres into one. For example the intro includes generic conventions of an action movie. It is also targeted at sci fi fans as it included space ships/explosions/futuristic technology. Comedy fans may also go and watch this film as simon pegg is in the trailer. I think the trailer is mostly aimed at the stereotypical man as the trailer consists of explosions, women, fighting and action. Star trek fans will also watch the film as they follow the films and it includes the spock close up (movement of the hand) Women may also be interested in the film as it includes a narrative of strong women and romance.

Narrative Structures - The narrative is usually linear (in a straight line, things happen in order)
Single strand (one plot line, story of one person)
Non linear - (to break the straight line of the story, things may not happen in order)
Multi stranded - (many characters with many story-lines, think soaps/love actually)
Enigma codes - (puzzles we need the character to solve and that keep us interested)
Character types - (hero,villain,victim)
Flashbacks - (characters looking back at certain events)
